Dr. Potter is a scholar of American Studies, history, and popular culture.
She is a Professor of History at The New School and is the author/editor of several books including War on Crime: Bandits, G-Men and the Politics of Mass Culture and the forthcoming Beyond Pornography: How Feminism Survived the Age of Reagan.
As the "Tenured Radical" she is perhaps best known for her column at The Chronicle of Higher Education and as a scholar at the forefront of public pedagogy and its intersection(s) with digital media and democracy.
Claire has also been a friend of The Chauncey DeVega Show for some time. She has also been a great booster and supporter of Chauncey DeVega's other online work.

Thanks Chauncey and Claire for reassuring us that there's still lots of activism out there. To hear the media tell it the US is one big Epcott Center with beautiful buildings and facilities but bereft of real people.
Apartheid seems to be the type case with popular resistance making it the obvious limiting case.
Righties reacting to tenured radicals have adjunctified of the professoriot as part of the frontal assault on teachers, students, public ed, and knowledge in general, via charterization, NCLB, and high stakes testing.

There is resistance, but much of it is not covered by the mass media. Suppress dissent at all costs--or manage and commodify it.
Great podcast! Not to take anything away from Claire Potter or any of your other guests but my favorite part of your podcasts are your political musings at the beginning.

Thanks for asking, Chauncey. Your question makes me realize that it's high time that I wrote that story down. The fact that I, a writer, have been avoiding writing about it for 30 years reflects my unwillingness to face what was one of the most horrific events of my life. So I will make you a deal: this weekend I will face down the damn thing and write about it and then share with you. For this space and this moment, I will respond by saying that the title of the story is "Naive and Good-hearted (White) Girl Gets Teeth Knocked In for Protecting Epileptic (Black) Man From Vicious (White) Cop." It's not a catchy title, but it sums things up.
