The Irony of the Black Freedom Struggle's Victory is That We Created a Generation Who Has the Luxury of Not Being Black

I have met so many black folks younger than me who identify as being anything other than what their racial selves actually are. Instead, these young people are "Hispanic," "mixed," "White-identified," "multicultural," "part Indian," or something else. I smirk, because in another age, not too long ago, they too would be up on the auction block with no qualifier given. And for the record none of them could pass the brown paper bag test. Riddle me that one...

In the present, these same folks have the luxury--because of the blood struggles of their ancestors--to run away from blackness. History is laughing, is she not?

****

I love me some Dr. Akbar. Each week or so I am going to be sharing some of his wisdom for those who are tempted to write off our "Afrocentric" brothers without engaging the knowledge which the best and brightest of them bring to the game.

My rediscovery of Dr. Akbar is pleasant and brings on a laugh or two (or three). As a young college student who was dragged with great resistance by his mentors to the Black Man Think Tanks and other such events across this country, I never would have imagined that in my later years I would come to appreciate the hidden truths and knowledge I was exposed to in those spaces. At the time, I thought those events were spaces of reified black masculinity and tired tropes born of obsolete people searching for relevance.

Now I realize that many young people of color, especially those born in the post-Civil Rights moment, are not equipped with the mental and spiritual armor necessary to deal with the psychic burden of blackness--especially as strength can often be turned into weakness by the forces of backstage and frontstage racism.

The multicultural dreams of their parents, peers, popular culture, teachers, and mentors have left them naked and vulnerable before the continued onslaught of structural and impersonal racism. Using a military analogy, old school bigotry was the massed firepower of artillery and the machine gun at the Somme. Modern racism is asymmetrical warfare that beats you with a thousand little cuts backed up by a single JDAM dropped at high altitude from a B-2 stealth bomber that you never hear or see.

My mentors left me prepared to deal with both types of attack. For that gift I am thankful...however belated I may be in offering love and respect.

The last few weeks' conversations about Obama, race, authenticity, and identity can all draw a direct line back to Dr. Akbar's brilliant observation about the trap of freedom and racial self-identification in the glow of the Civil Rights Movement's many successes.

It would seem that race as lived practice and identity in the Age of Obama is indeed a paradox, one that we are still sorting out. Is linked fate and a keen sense of what "black is and black ain't" a blessing or a curse? Is Cornel "blacker" than Obama? Is Cain a "real" black man? Is President Obama a Black president or is he a man who happens to be black? What do we owe to our children and to each other in teaching these lessons?

I am still groping for an answer. Perhaps, we can help each other find one together.

afrodemic scholars giving dap to their afrocentric elders is kind of like the conference of bishops giving mimetic cover to the college of cardinals.

jiggaboos might as well have been collecting and trading comic books for all the economic development and job creation that emerged from these kente cloth circle jerks.

if the very best that the "black partisan" is capable of is a lot of airy fairy conversation, then it's no wonder that the young heads want nothing whatsoever to do with that nonsense.

the second and third line inheritors of the civil rights movement have proven themselves some of the most epic organizing, leading, and managing failures - OF ALL TIME!!!! (and collectively need to sit down and stfu)

Hm, I would not call that a luxury, or as Akbar does, an option. I would call that a delusion. At worst, it's a curse. In my circles, I don't meet anyone who thinks like that, or at least anyone who would articulate it to me, though I do see it online all the time.

No one can litmus test or paper bag test our Blackness from us.

@CNu

jiggaboos might as well have been collecting and trading comic books for all the economic development and job creation that emerged from these kente cloth circle jerks.

ROTFL, ok you owe me a new laptop. Omg that was hilarious.

I was pretty hard on the dashikis-and-birkenstocks crowd myself, but that's not to say there's nothing to be learned from them.

I used to have to tell people all the time look, just because I like reading German Romantics from the 1800s doesn't mean I agree with or have been converted to anything they say; same goes for Afrocentrianity. It's just another ism.

Right, we should learn from them what not to do, and how not to overstay your "welcome" in our communities.

Don't get me wrong OC, I LOVE and RESPECT my elders.

It's just not the case that everything old, prancing around in dress daishikis and keeping 1970 alive - qualifies as a beloved and respected elder.

THIS is a beloved and respected elder OC. {One who is friends with every single one of these afro breath and britches characters from sea to shining sea - but who has not himself been properly acknowledged for the singular greatness that his work has yielded over the past 35 years}

Featured in these videos, is the chairman and founder of the WEBDubois Learning Center, L.L. Dixon.

Mr. Dixon stopped by my house monday evening with a thumb drive full of mp4's. About an hour after we sat down in my office, he had not only gotten gmailed and youtubed up, but was beginning to appreciate the possibilities of Google Apps for Education and where exactly this little exercise could lead.

For the past 6 years, I've been pushing, prodding, and cajoling him to begin recording tutorial sessions at the WEBDubois Learning Center, a truly one-of-a-kind institution in the whole and entire U.S. - if you peruse its links, you'll find out exactly how far down the afrocentric rabbit hole its bona fides go.

That the NBUF an'em haven't held up the Learning Center as THE QUINTESSENTIAL MODEL for doing things correctly, and that the NBUF an'em have not replicated the Learning Center model in every major metropolitan area where it has a footprint, is one of the epic tragedies of contemporary black history.

Jiggaboos too busy being stuck in 1970 - selling books, and newspapers and giving paid lectures on arcana, errata, and outright gottdayyum nonsense - to take a successful model of competency propagation - and make it the sine qua non of everything they do. That said, everybody's gotta have a hobby, and kente cloth circle jerks are no more intrinsically evil than renaissance fairs or comic book conventions, but on the serious tip, two or three generations have suffered a HUGE generational disconnect due to the largely useless hobby enthusiasms and personal profit and popularity seeking of these self-absorbed so-called "elders".

I go exceedingly hard on the afrocentric/afrodemic set OC, almost as hard as I go in on the CBC/preacher/pundit/politician class. I have no use for any of them because they comprise a demographic to whom much was given and they squandered it and failed.

We have entered the era of the afronerd. Everything else, is merely conversation...,

Aces on the above comments. History isn't the only one that's laughing. I'm laughing myself.

Is Herman Cain a real Black man? If he tried to run away from it, he wouldn't make it three steps towards the door. "Delusion," as O Crap says. The operative verb here is "to be." How he butters his parsnips is another story altogether.

Racial identity is not a multiple choice test with all correct answers. The answer is in the mirror. This, unfortunately, brings us to the reality of the "one drop" rule. In reality, one drop doesn't mean anything if it doesn't show, but if it does show, and the person in the mirror looks Black, well, there it is. You can be all the Hispanic you want, and Black. You can be as Irish as me, and Black.

President Obama is stuck being Black like I'm stuck being a tattooed fuck-up. It's unseemly to struggle against facts so basic.

Super Post and Questions!!!!!!!

I always feel this notion of running away is present on this site..

Other than Fred and myself the regulars.. Why do you(CD), CNu, Oh Crap run from yourselves and post under an alias etc???

I think this analysis will add some discovery on why the new age generation also runs from Blackness..

Of course none of you have to respond nor will your lack of reply in any way change my respect nor admiration for all of you but I do think your posting preferences can bring light to this inquiry...At Least I hope so:-)

@Cnu. I have not ever been a member of the dashiki wearing party!

You need to write your own book of quotables. It can be an updated version of Ellis McCoy's treatise, "Nigger."

Random, where is your boy Cobb as of late? And what of Constructive Feedback? Did you hurt their feelings?

@OhCrap. You are lucky. I meet confused wannabe ex-black folks all the time. Some of the most tragic are a beautiful brown hue and want to claim that they are not "black identified".

@Fred. The Obama tattoo fuck up is a quotable for a t-shirt or book. You got a money maker there.

@Thrasher. Always wanting folks to drop the mask. One day. But this may also be a generation issue too. Chauncey DeVega is just as black--except one day a month when I take my "be white for a day holiday" as his "real" self.

Plane Ideas said...

CD,

Your misread my request ..I am not seeking you to document for me if

"Chauncey DeVega is just as black--except one day a month when I take my "be white for a day holiday" as his "real" self"

My query's intent was to discover why you and others post as you do or behind the mask??

Is it generational? Is it a concern about privacy? Job security? Whatever?

Again as I noted earlier your reply or no reply does not alter my respect and admiration for your content and personhood..

Thrasher aka Greg Thrasher ( no mask)

Funny thing though- a sure way to make one of them go apoplectic is for you to tell them they're not black:).

Just like those layers of attack, there will continue to be layers of unanticipated outcomes. For every brown face that belies the whiteness of America, there is a non-brown face experiencing the exact same America and Republican politico can't stand what they have created.

Let's not look at colors. Let's see the truth, even if we have to begin with numbers.

Abstentus said...

Ok. Ya'll remember the scene in "Amistad," when Cinqe talks about how each and every one of his ancestors led him to be here (there?) I take that upside down and do my best to own all my ancestors. That includes the mad dog English pirates from Sir Francis Drake's last expedition (they landed in Cape Verde and left their mark on the population of the island where my grandmother was born.) And it also includes Sephardic Jews, Visagoths and Celts and Phoneician (that Portuguese ancestry is a melting pot all by itself.) And I will stop the list there for brevity's sake.

One the other hand, I well appreciate the punch line of old joke that goes like,"Well you in America now. You're black!"

For me black is more my group identity as an American. It's not my true self identity. That's all the ancestors. However if I ever get to visit the cousins who never left Cape Verde (save to visit,) all that talk about blackness really has a lot less meaning for them. Never mind if I go and vist the very very very (as in not really actually) distant cousins in Nigeria. It's about what tribe you are from, over there. For better or worse folk from both major tribes think I look like one of them.

Cobb got a new gig, and if you must have a dose of that nucking futter Ronald A. Barr (aka coonstructive feedbag), you can ALWAYS find him at Bookerrising or at any one of his 6+ blogs where he dispenses his own unique brand of hypergraphic coonery daily...,

Here's what I like best about throwing that jiggaboo rock. You know that when you throw it, inevitably and invariably the self-identified will reflexively bark and yelp when hit.

These useless, geriatric, race pimps are self-conscious about their obsolescence and irrelevance, and they know that it's long overdue time for them to stfu...,

I am a 31 year old black woman from SoCal. I think this generation has subconsciously bought into "american exceptionalism" and semi-consciously believes in classism instead of structural racism. I always wonder if people realize they are the exception to the rule because of what they are NOT. For example; they are viewed as black but not "black black."

In short, I think this generation believes "proper" assimilation can only be obtained by being viewed as a different kind of black. Maybe they feel they can't obtain "proper" assimilation in a society if they are constantly assess it. Just my opinion...

More importantly I am not interested in the behaviors of jiggaboos or those running from themselves..In truth those who are self possessed bring more to the table their genius is not conflicted..

Here's the deal the luxury of not being Black has the capacity to liberate the full being where a concern about Blackness is not revelant so that one's ends up with a fully centered person whose Blackness is so organic it's genius is fully engaged..

Abstentus said...

"Blackness," is not a unique American thing, but there is a unique American sense of the word. I hesitate to say definition, as that is elusive. The better defined word in America is white. All other race terms in America = not white, or not white enough. That is the easy part. Hard part is recognizing the fact that even if under the racist American Heritage view, one size fits all.

Reality is, once you drive a stake through it's heart, chop it's head off, burn the corpse, and scatter the ashes so far and wide the vampire of American White Based Race Classification and Stratification is vanquished?

Then there is only one truth to accept (before moving on to the real nitty gritty, as my almost-cousin Malcolm had said.) Truth is one size does not fit all.

None of my ancestors were slaves in this hemiphere. Does that mean I am less black? Shit, some of my ancestors were likely the first African Slaves made to work Euro. Plantations (in Cape Verde,) and that would have been before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. At the least, before, as almost-cousin Malcolm said, "Plymouth Rock landed on US!"

Now were my ancestors processed through the slave fort of Sierra Leone? Maybe. But shit, some of them likely built the fort, as slave labor. At minimum some of them were sent through the port of Bissaou when all that was there for the Portugues slavers were a few tents, and huts, and a wooden fence.

Again, one size does not fit all.

I have hesitated getting on Doctor Brother Cornel West's case for his remarks last week. But if I had a direct line to him, I would say,"One size does not fit all. You knew my distant cousin Dean Gomes (deceased, bless his soul) of Harvard. So you certainly know, one size does not fit all."

Other than Fred and myself the regulars.. Why do you(CD), CNu, Oh Crap run from yourselves and post under an alias etc???

Because??? I post under an alias simply because I can.

Control freaks -- they are invariably male, typically white conservative ones -- can ascribe whatever motives or personal fantasies they like. Why should I care?

fred c said...

How much of this relates to the mystery of self-identification? Who am I, really? It's all very subjective. It's been so long since I began to bury the person that I am beneath the person that I want to be that I hardly know what the reality is anymore. Most of the time I feel like I really am the polite, charming, cooperative man that I want to be, and I am genuinely surprised when the bitter, hateful reality comes out, usually when I have hurt myself, or things have gone particularly badly that day.

I'll own up to running away from myself in that way, and I guess to some extent I run away from my Whiteness too. I certainly don't want people to use it as the first classifier. In that I have less to worry about than people in other racial groups, prejudice being what it is. So I wouldn't want to criticize if others tried to de-emphasize race in much the same way.

Longtime Blogger said...

I just find it hilarious that Thrasher believes he is somehow entitled to the identity of anyone using aliases.

It's said, there are no secrets on the internet, and that is likely true. There are also plenty of stalkers and other control freaks on the internet, typically men with something to prove themselves; none of whom can ever be trusted. Everybody responds to this condition in their own way.

@fred c Hm, I'd say that's an apples/oranges comparison. For every Black kid who thinks they are "multicultural" or "mixed" or "biracial" or whatever (as if the idea is something new to us), I know 10 whites running from being seen as the beneficiaries of unearned, unmerited group rights; or are all too willing to engage in public self-flagellation out of guilt for those privileges, or in some personal effort to prove (mainly to themselves, preferably with Black validation) they are different from the average white bigot.

That's a much different boat than Black kids who buy into the idea posed by Anonymous, above, that one must distance themselves from stereotypical "Blackness" to be an authentic person.

fred c said...

Oh, Oh Crap, can't think of anything nice to say about men or White people? That's cool, I can dig it. For most of my adult life, my major prejudice was against prosperous, fifty-something White men. I was afraid that some day I'd become one, but I no longer have to worry about that.

I'll stand by my comments though.

fred c said...

Thrasher, you are easily one of the most ridiculous, devoid of useful content, self-promoting ass-wipes I've ever witnessed online.

Most folks don't even perpetrate anonymously the way you do as yourself. You have absolutely nothing of value to offer and you simply let the entire world know the extent of your parasitic nothingness.

a competent eleven year old can find out who I am, you on the other hand - probably not so much.

As far as I'm concerned, that's an acceptable state of affairs and one entirely reflective of your overarching incompetence and cosmic uselessness.

Some advice for next time: if it lasts more than 4 hours you should call your doctor.
