I am 47 and my husband is 53. Tonight is the first time we have ever listened to a President or President-elect (unless you count newsreels of JFK) and actually felt proud to be American. I feel like our esteem in the world has jumped into the stratosphere. Do I dare to hope and trust? Yes, I do.
Why does it take a 1/2 black man to be elected President to feel proud in America? What is wrong with black people? Nobody has held you here against your will. If you don't like it, go back to your homeland. The same goes for anyone else that hates America, including Obama and his anti-American wife. We aren't keeping you on lockdown. Do us a favor and leave!
That Barack Obama could be elected in spite of those who hold your sentiment ... this is the source of my pride.
Obviously, you never learned that America wasn't founded on the notion of "like it or leave it." It was founded on the idea that if you don't like it, you have the freedom, maybe even the obligation, to speak up and work to make it better.
I'm sure that lots of Native Americans would like for us all to go back to our "homelands," but we are here to stay -- you, me and the rest of us.
I feel nothing. One thousand Barack Obamas isn't worth one Rev. Wright. He threw his mentor who made it all possible under the bus to appease his mother's people, I'll never forgive or forget that.
He isn't black he is mixed race the one drop rule is racist and offensive. If he was jet black he wouldn't be the new manager of the empire.
I'm sick and tired of their bullshit game telling me its a hot sunny day when I can feel the rain I know and I understand Barack Obama is a Biracial man, you can fool some people sometimes but you can't fool all the people all the time and now I see the light I'm gonna stand up for my rights.
Since I made the "proud of my country" remark, I felt obligated to come back and explain. We were proud of the speech the President-elect gave (hence, my references to the speeches of JFK and RFK). After 8 years of actions America has taken that we are not proud of, our sense of pride is in the message Obama's speech sent to us and to the world. My pride is not solely because of Obama's race, although in a country where a large percentage of the population today lived through segregation and Jim Crow, it is not insignificant that he won this election. And for the record, I'm both a veteran and white.
no need to explain being proud! we are all proud, but the nature of our pride may be mixed with healthy cynicism. I have really been thinking about the nature of patriotism in these United States, especially for those who are Other.
